"I never really thought of him as a real person. I mean, he was something that happened to me, you know? But before he was this minor figure in the drama of my life, he was - you know, the central figure in the drama of his own life."
Isn't that in interesting thought? (By the way, I'm kind of going to take this quote out of context.)
I read it, and then I read it over again. And then I put down the book and thought for a minute.
How easy is it to belittle people? Especially when someone is a big important character in the drama of your life. They are just something that happens to you.
How easy is to forget that they are the lead role in their own drama, where you are just a supporting character? Something that happened to them?
In any book you'll read, there's a main character. They never leave the story. Supporting characters may come and go. Sometimes a character will grow, and then shrink away again. But through all this, you get to know your main character. You get to know what is important to them, what they believe in, what they hate, what they love and who they are.
But then, a supporting character enters. And the character grows. And soon, the supporting character is playing a big role. They might change the main character, and lots of the times, that's okay. But sometimes it's not.
My mentor asked me, "Who/what defines who you are?" God does. I am a child of God. I am loved. This describes my main character.
But you need to remember. The supporting character? Is not just your supporting character. They are their own main character. And who are they? They are a child of God. They are loved. Sometimes that's harder to remember.
My mentor said not to let someone tell me who I am. I know that I am a child of God, and loved by God. I need to remember that, but also remember who the other people are.
My supporting characters are children of God, too.
She said, "Treat them like children of God. But don't treat them as God."
So, characters meet and become characters in each other's stories. As they grow in these relationships, it's important for them to remember who they are, and who their supporting characters are too.
My main character is a child of God and my main character trait is loved. So is yours.
I'll remember that. You remember that too.
