Mom: Gage, you need to be a good boy otherwise I'll have to send you to your room all by yourself!
Charter: Yeah... AND YOU'LL HEAR NOISES!

Hmm. Thoughts on Kony.
I'm finding all this discussion about Kony really interesting... (Who needs social studies? I swear I'm learning more this week than I did all last semester in social10. haha)
I'm still developing my opinion on Kony2012... I shared the video that was FOR Kony2012 on Facebook, and now I'm sharing this video AGAINST Kony2012...
Like this video says, the Kony2012 video does simplify the whole story. I'd encourage you to watch it, but read into it a bit more. Develop your own opinion before jumping on the bandwagon :)
(One mistake I noticed in this video though, was that she said something about the information in the kony video being old - that the situation is improving in Uganda so now its more about re-building what was lost in war. The Kony video DID say that Kony was moving out from Uganda. The problem is: Kony is still out there, just somewhere else... The focus of Kony2012 wasn't on Uganda, it was on Kony and stopping him where ever he may be...)I know Kony is bad. Bad, bad, bad. I agree he needs to be stopped. I know he's hurt thousands and thousands of children beyond belief. I think that we need to stick up for those people.
But - is sending an army into the country and treating violence with violence the best route? My friend said, "If we send the military in, aren't we killing the people we're trying to save?" Because Kony's army is Kony's victims. Kony's army is child soldiers who were kidnapped out of their own beds!(That's one thought... another is, "I can't think of a better way, so who am I to say they're wrong?")
I agree with her statement about the Kony video making out that the US is the only solution... I thought that too, and I think that other countries (Like Uganda) need to step up to protect their people with out international assistance.
Another thing I noticed in the Kony2012 video, was that it sounded like, "Now you know what Kony does. now you know he's bad. Here's how we're going to stop him."
Now, the reason I don't like that statement, is because once anyone hears about Kony, they know he's bad and want to stop him and protect those children. So then, since they are against Kony, they imediately think they are with the Kony2012 organization. They don't think twice on it.
Anyway... Like I said, I'm not sure what my opinion is yet. I'm open to hearing others while I wrestle though my own thoughts!

Harry Potter
So, I know I'm a little late... I just read the Harry Potter books now... I thought that they would be nerdy, lame and too 'witchy' for me, but I finally read them because I felt culturally illiterate among many of my friends... (And I thought they were really good... So I guess I was wrong. But even Dumbledore was wrong sometimes, so its ok.) Anyway, Sloan and I both finished reading them this week/last week...
Last night, we were in Sloan's bedroom, and Peyton asked how Harry's parents died.
"You want to know how they die?! I'LL SHOW YOU HOW THEY DIE! Sloan, I'll be Voldemort, you be Lily. That pillow on your bed can be Harry. See this pair of chopsticks lying randomly on your shelf? I'll use one as my wand. Ready? Set, GO!"
Sloan played her part wonderfully.
"NO!!!!! NOT HARRY!!!! TAKE ME INSTEAD!!! DON'T HURT POOR LITTLE HHAAAAAARRRRYYY!!!!"
"Stand aside, woman! I do not need to kill you! Your death in not necessary! Stand aside and you will be unharmed!"
"NOOOOOOOO!!!! DON'T KILL HARRY!!!!!!!!"
At this point, I remembered that even though it was really fun to act out death scenes from Harry Potter, it was 9pm and charter was on the other side of the door trying to sleep.
"K, Sloan? Lets finish the rest of the story a little quieter, k?"
"NOOOO!!! I WILL NOT BE SILENCED!!! LILY WASN'T QUIET WHEN VOLDEMORT WAS ABOUT TO KILL HER BABY! I WILL NOT BE QUIET!"
The next few seconds are a blur... I don't remember what exactly happened, but one of us shouted, "HOW DARE YOU?!" And she leaped off the bed and grabbed the second chopstick off of the shelf. Before I had time to register what had happened, we were both standing, panting, pointing chopsticks at each other. Then, at the exact same moment, we both yelled at each other, "AVADA KEDAVRA!"
We sat there in shock for a few seconds before collapsing on the floor in hysterical laughter.
Yep. Nerds.

Oldie Poldie part 3
So, we're eating lunch and my BFSBK (See my last post) says to peyton, "Hey, Peyton... you should marry Jacob (Her brother, who once proposed to Peyton when they were 4... Peyton declined...) Then we could be sisters!"
Peyton shrugs, not convinced...
"Well, you and Catricia would be sisters, too..." (Alisha's other sister who's peytons age)
Peyton suddenly is more excited about the idea. "THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!"
"Soo, Catricia makes it worth it, but not me?"
"Well, you and Cairo are so old... You're not gonna be around for much longer... Catricia, she's still young! I'd have her forever!"

Oldie poldie part 2
*Read Part one HERE*
So, this weekend, I had my bestfriendsincebeforekindergarten over. While the three loudest of my siblings were at the park for a sledding party, we decided to get some P.E. hours in and do some dancing on the wii. (Yes, it counts. best workout ever)
So, in the words of Gage, "We was on FIRE!"
The kids came home and told us about all the cool song choices they played at the party. (Mollen was disappointed that they didn't have 'dancing in the minefields' and 'Jesus freak" haha)
"Oh, YEAH?! Well, me and Alisha stayed home in our PJs and threw down some pretty sick moves..."
They stare back with blank faces.
Charter was the first to speak, "Um, when you said that, I just pictured some really, really old people dancing wii... *Shudder*"
Mollen spoke up, "I pictured them in their underwear jumping and dancing on Cai's bed..."
Well, that's flattering...

The reason I'm not going on the missions trip...
So, my youth group is going on a missions trip to downtown Vancouver... When they first announced it, people started signing up immediately, but I was kind of 'meh' about it, so I didn't...
Now, here we are, 6 months closer to the date, and I'm still feeling 'meh' about it... (Good thing I'm not going! haha)
Wanna know why?
Because we live 30 minutes away from downtown Calgary...
Why do we feel the need to go, not that Vancouver is *that far*, away to do missions?
A couple weeks ago, my youth group went and served at a ministry downtown called the 'Jesus Loves You Society". Pretty much what we did, we helped serve a turkey dinner to families, we brought 50 presents that we had collected from the church community, we talked with the moms, played with the kids and then helped clean up and then went home...
Do you think we made a difference?
To the kids we gave christmas presents to, who possibly wouldn't have gotten much else that year... Do you think we made a difference? To the mom's who have a hard time providing for their families, and saw us playing with their kids... Do you think we made a difference?
I think we did, and I think we could make a bigger difference by going every week, getting to know the kids that go there all the time... Building relationships with those people.
And you know what? I think my youth group that goes to Vancouver this summer will make a difference there too.
If my youth group went downtown, to the JLYS or elsewhere, once a week for the next 10, 20 or even 30 years (By then we wouldn't be the same group, but it would still be a group of teens from Mckenzie Towne Church), would we completely fill the need in our city? Would every single homeless person have a home, every lonely person have a friend, every hungry person be fed, every unsaved person get to know Jesus?
Not by a long shot.
So why do we need to fund raise and spend hundreds of dollars to take 12 people to another city just like our own, to do exactly what we could do without spending that money?
The definition of the word 'missionary' is:
a person sent by a church into an area to carry on evangelism or other activities, as educational or hospital work.
Or: Someone sent on a mission.
They didn't say how far you had to go to be a missionary. What is the difference between 'going' to Vancouver and 'going' downtown Calgary? Or 'going' to your next door neighbour? Is one more noble than the other? Does one make a bigger difference?
And, just so everyone knows, I'm not saying that going 'away' for missions trips DOESN'T make a difference, I just think that we can have an impact at home, too...
Its just something I've been thinking a lot about lately... What do you think?
Jamie the Very Worst Missionary (Who occasionally swears on her blog, but is awesome anyway!! haha) wrote a couple of posts on short term missions and the sometimes negative of them... (Please read them! They are worth reading!)
Later this year she's going to write about the positive side of short term missions trips... I can't wait to read it!
